I was having lunch with a friend recently and asked her, out of the blue, “What do you think of when you hear the phrase ‘content marketing?’”
An ominous pall came over her face and she replied, “I get scared.”
Hmm, never heard that one before. I asked her why.
She leaned forward and said, in a whisper usually reserved for discussions about bodily functions, “Because I think you’re gonna make me write white papers.”
Yes, there is a popular notion that content marketing is some heavy, academic undertaking that forces you to lock yourself away in a tower and crank out massive volumes of dense verbiage.
In reality, content marketing is simply the practice of building relationships with your current and prospective customers by delivering engaging, value-based content. How do we do that? Through blogs, emails, social media, ebooks, webinars, podcasts … and yes, if you’re so inclined, the occasional white paper.
Believe it or not, you’re creating content any time you talk to your audience without trying to sell them.
In other words, content is not a sales pitch; it’s a value-based communication that informs, educates, entertains, and/or inspires.
So, what does content look like?
That, my friend, is content, and it’s what we eat, live, and breathe here at Resonance Content Marketing.
