Out of Content Ideas? Try This.
J.K. Rowling once admitted, “Sometimes the ideas just come to me. Other times I have to sweat and almost bleed to make ideas come.”
I’m sure every content creator can relate.
Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could put our schedules on hold until the muse works her magic and delivers the ideal topic for our next blog post, e-newsletter, or video? But alas, this is content marketing, and we must deliver quality content frequently and consistently, muse or no muse.
So, what can we do when we’re up against a deadline and the ideas just aren’t coming?
Allow me to offer two idea-generating exercises in this excerpt from Chapter 10 of The Content Marketing Coach: Everything You Need to Get in the Game … and WIN, now available for pre-order!
Exercise 1: Congratulations, You’re a Media Star!
Suppose one of the editors of the New York Times called and offered you a weekly column, or the producers of The Today Show offered you a weekly segment. Would you find something to talk about? I bet you would!
Start making a list of the topics you’d cover in that weekly column or weekly segment, and you’ll have the beginning of a killer content topic list.
Exercise 2: “Let Me Ask You This …”
Consider what I call the “let me ask you this” questions. When you introduce yourself to someone and they find out what you do, sometimes you’ll hear “Let me ask you this …” followed by a question that the person’s been dying to have answered. Those questions can be an absolute gold mine for content topics.
For example, if you’re in the corporate travel business, you might hear something like “Oh, you’re in travel? Let me ask you this: Which airline has the best loyalty program?” Boom, content topic.
