5 reasons to add audio to your bag of tricks

PodcastAs you may know, I’ve become a big fan of Cinch over the last few months, and have made the free micro podcasting service a regular component of my blog updates.

Just last week, the company announced a major new offeringa private podcasting service that allows businesses to create, share, measure, and monetize audio content. Subscribers will have the capability to seamlessly publish live streaming and on-demand audio from a browser-based studio or mobile application.

As pleased as I’ve been with the Cinch community, I’m happy to see them stepping up their game and hope the new service will attract more businesses to discovering the benefits of audio content.

And if your organization has yet to step up to the mike, here are 5 solid reasons to add it to your content-marketing bag of tricks.

1. It’s a step up from the printed word.

As a writer, I love the written word as much as anybody. That said, audio lets youremove one degree of separation between yourself and your audience by adding your own voice to the content—and bringing those words to life.

2. It’s a great segue into video.

It’s no secret that online video is quickly making the transition from “nice to have” to “gotta have” for businesses of all sizes. If stage fright is still holding you back, audio offers a nice toe-dip into the realm of online broadcasting. Once you’re comfortable in front of the microphone, turning on the camera will be a whole lot easier.

3. You’ll improve your presentation style.

When I first started doing online audio, I was awful. There, I said it. I spoke way too fast and my diction was horrid. But by recording, listening to, and re-recording myself week after week, I gradually got better. And the next time I got up in front of an audience to make a presentation, I took those acquired speaking skills with me, and I became a much more effective presenter as a result.

4. Low cost, low risk.

As with most things technical, there’s no limit to the amount you can spend on your audio setup. The good news is that you can buy yourself a decent microphone for about $25. The Cinch.fm site is free to use, and if you want to record your own MP3 files, user-friendly software is readily available for a low (or no) cost.

5. No image required.

Yes, I’ll admit that I’ve recorded audio content in my underwear. Because I can. Unlike video, which requires lighting considerations and camera setup—not to mention at least a modicum of attention to hair, makeup, and wardrobe—audio just requires you, your microphone, and a handy glass of water.
